Unlike Angola and Mozambique, Cape Verde obtained its independence in 1975 with little bloodshed. Since independence, Cape Verde has been ruled by the same political party which controls Guinea-Bissau on the mainland; they are de facto united. This type, the smallest ever issued by the independent republic, was struck in 1977 and 1980 but has not been struck since.
