Canada 1970 50 cents
This specimen was part of lot 51211 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Specimen Set (6 Pieces), 1970. Ottawa Mint. Elizabeth II. All PCGS Certified. Mintage: 100. 1) Dollar. PCGS SPECIMEN-67. KM-78. Manitoba commemorative. 2) 50 Cents. PCGS SPECIMEN-68. KM-75. 3) 25 Cents. PCGS SPECIMEN-68. KM-62B. 4) 10 Cents. PCGS SPECIMEN-67. KM-77. 5) 5 Cents. PCGS SPECIMEN-67. KM-60.1. 6) Cent. PCGS SPECIMEN-68 Red. KM-59. Ex: Eric Beckman Collection." While the specimens are scarce, the circulation strikes and prooflike strikes are very common. The dollar commemorated the centennial of Manitoba. This type, the first struck in base metal, was issued 1968-76. The nickel fifty cents was often carelessly struck and perfect examples are not easy to find.
Recorded mintage: 2,429,526 plus 645,869 prooflike plus 100 specimens.
Specification: 8.1 g, nickel, 27.13 mm diameter, reeded edge.
