Künker sale 354, lot 5578

This specimen was lot 5578 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$4,175 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Wilhelm, 1831-1884. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1850, CvC. Probe ohne Randschrift; Von großer Seltenheit. Etwas berieben, vorzüglich. Kurt Jaeger kannte sieben Exemplare. Im AKS werden diese Stücke als Doppeltalerproben bezeichnet, Jaeger hält es hingegen für möglich, daß es sich um spätere Privatprägungen handelt. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, William, 1831-84, double union thaler of 1850, pattern without edge lettering. Extremely rare, polished, extremely fine. Kurt Jaeger reported seven known. In the AKS these pieces are referred to as double thaler patterns, but Jaeger believes it is possible that they were privately struck later.)"

The bust of the duke shown here was never used on any production coin. It appears in the SCWC as patterns for 1849-50.
