Künker sale 386, lot 5100

This specimen was lot 5100 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,618 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl II. 1815-1830. Selbständige Regierung, 1823-1830. 1/2 Konv.-Taler 1829, CvC. Probe in Silber. Mit geriffeltem Rand. R Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Charles, 1815-30, independent rule, 1823-30, half convention thaler of 1829, pattern in silver, with reeded edge. Rare, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The last half thaler struck for circulation was dated 1776 and no thalers were struck between 1821 and 1837. Karl II was overthrown in 1830 but survived in exile until 1873.
