Sincona Auction 103, lot 231

This specimen was lot 231 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 425 CHF (about US$648 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Wolfenbüttel, Herzogtum. Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, 1780-1806. 24 Mariengroschen 1805, Braunschweig. Mit dem Münzzeichen MC der Münz-Commission. NGC MS63. Hübsche Patina. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Charles William Ferdinand, 1780-1806, 24 mariengroschen of 1805, Brusnwick mint, with initials "MC" for "Monetary Commission". Attractively toned, Finest certified by NGC.)"

The convention of 1753 which established the convention thaler also reduced the gulden from ⅔ thaler to half a thaler. Princes continued to mint gulden marked "⅔" as before but only half a thaler in metal. The ⅔ thaler was retired in 1779 but the equivalent 24 mariengroschen continued until 1834. This type was struck 1789-1806. This denomination was also struck with a leaping stallion obverse until 1800.
