Künker sale 439, lot 2391

This specimen was lot 2391 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,307 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM Karl I., 1735-1780. 5 Taler 1744, Braunschweig. GOLD. Sehr schön. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Charles I, 1735-80, five thalers of 1744, Brunswick mint. Very fine.)"

This type is listed for 1742-75 but is rare despite the long run of production. The duke also struck 2½ (Fr-715) and ten thaler gold pieces (Fr-713). The 1744 comes with and without the "M" on the truncation of the bust.

Specification: 6.65 g, 0.900 fine gold, .192 troy oz AGW, 24 mm diameter, this specimen 6,61 g.
