Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1620 thaler Dav-6303
This specimen was lot 55446 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1620. Goslar or Zellerfeld Mint. Friedrich Ulrich. PCGS EF-40. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1613-28 and is among the more common thalers of the period. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors. This thaler, Dav-6303, was struck at Goslar and Zellerfeld while the very similar Dav-6306 was struck only at Clausthal. Duke Friedrich Ulrich ruled 1613-34.
