Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1620 4 thaler Dav-LS46
This specimen was lot 1142 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$10,532 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Herzogtum. Friedrich Ulrich, 1613-1634. Löser zu 4 Taler 1620, Goslar oder Zellerfeld. Münzmeister Hans Laffers. Mit eingepunzter Wertzahl. Von grösster Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. Feine Patina. Grafitto im Avers und kleine Kratzer im Revers. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Frederick Ulrich, 1613-34, quadruple thaler of 1620, Goslar or Zellerfeld mint, with denomination punched in. Of the highest rarity, Extremely fine, Nicely toned, Grafitto on obverse and minor scratches on reverse)"
The dukes of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel specialized in the production of these enormous multiple thalers. These dies were also used to make quintuple thalers (KM 227) and sextuple thalers (KM 228), the denomination being punched in each specimen.
