Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1620 6 thaler Dav-LS44
This specimen was lot 4147 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €8,500 (about US$11,153 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBUTTEL, Friedrich Ulrich, 1613-1634. Löser zu 6 Reichstalern 1620, Goslar oder Zellerfeld. Mit Wertpunze; Münzmeister Hans Laffers. Der geharnischte Herzog reitet r. mit hohem Hut, Kommandostab und umgelegtem, wehenden Mantel//Fünffach behelmtes, 11feldiges Wappen, zu den Seiten je ein wilder Mann mit Baumstamm, unten Kartusche mit eingepunzter Wertzahl. Von großer Seltenheit. Henkelspur, kl. Kratzer, Gravur ".A.H.S." auf dem Rand, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 343, Frankfurt/Main 1995, Nr. 1484 und der Preussag Collection, Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 1, London 2015, Nr. 26. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Frederick Ulrich, 1613-34, sextuple thaler of 1620, Goslar or Zellerfeld mint, with hallmark. Obverse: the armored, mantled, hatted and mounted duke charges right with baton; reverse: five helmeted, manifold arms supported by wild men with tree trunks, below, a cartouche with the value stamped in. Extremely rare, mount mark, hairlines, ".A.H.S." engraved on the edge, very fine.)"
The dukes of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel specialized in the production of these enormous multiple thalers. These dies were also used to make quadruple thalers (KM 227) and quintuple thalers (KM 227), the denomination being punched in each specimen.
