Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73209
SB223-73209r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73209 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1617. Goslar or Zellerfeld Mint. Friedrich Ulrich. PCGS AU-50. Exceptionally wholesome and appealing, this original crown offers great detail remaining throughout--especially to the facial features of the wildman, whose stoic expression extends far beyond the limits of the planchet. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This specimen seems to be a product of the Zellerfeld mint which was operated by mintmaster Heinrich Oeckeler (mintmark: crowned heart) who also worked at the Goslar mint. This type was struck 1613-28 and is only slightly less common than the well known Dav-6285 of Heinrich Julius.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-6303; KM-52.1; Welter-1057A.
