Sincona Auction 103, lot 217

This specimen was lot 217 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Wolfenbüttel, Herzogtum. Julius, 1568-1589. 1/4 Taler 1574, Goslar. Fast sehr schön. Leichte Prägeschwäche. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Julius, 1568-89, quarter thaler of 1574, Goslar mint. About Very Fine, Slightly weakly struck.)"

This type was struck 1570-82. While it is somewhat available, it is less common than the earlier quarter thalers of Heinrich IX (KM MB86). The "light" in the nickname refers to the lamp in the wild man's hand, not the weight.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.18 g, silver, 30 mm diameter, this specimen 7.08 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB134, Welter 591.
