SB822-30133r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30133 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. Taler, (15)68. Goslar Mint. Heinrich "the Younger". PCGS EF-45. With the name of Maximilian II. An impressive and interesting one-year type, this specimen features the bust of the Prince scowling left at the wildman to right, with both arms of the latter wrapped around a tree trunk. Deeply toned and evenly handled, while also being wholly original and problem-free. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1558 only and is scarce, verging on rare. The eagle reverse is unusual for this state. The cross of Lorraine mintmark refers to Andreas, mintmaster 1570-99. Riechenberg was the only other mint coining for the duke at this time.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM MB-118, Dav-9052; Welter-396.
