Brunswick (15)68 thaler Dav-9104
This specimen was lot 919 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it sold for €380 (about US$523 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, BRUNSWICK, Ville, AR Taler (24 Groschen), 1568. Au titre de Maximilien II. Avec la date au droit et au revers. D/ Lion rampant à g. R/ Aigle impériale couronnée. Rare. presque Très Beau. (Germany, city of Brunswick, silver thaler of 24 groschen of 1568, struck in the name of Maximilian II, with the date on the obverse and reverse. Obverse: lion rampant left; reverse crowned imperial eagle. Rare, about Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1568-70, all with two digit dates. The city of Brunswick asserted its independence and succeeded in forcing the Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel dukes to withdraw to Wolfenbüttel in 1432. In 1671, duke Rudolph Augustus besieged and captured the town.
