Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle 1643-LW 1/8 thaler
This specimen was lot 5599 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,505 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich, 1636-1648. 1/8 Reichstaler 1643, Clausthal, auf den Tod seiner Schwester Margarethe, Gemahlin Johann Casimirs von Sachsen-Coburg, am 7. August. RR Hübsche Patina, sehr schön +. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Westfälische Auktionsgesellschaft 48, Dortmund 2008, Nr. 524. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Frederick, 1636-48, one eight thaler of 1643, Clausthal mint, on the death of his sister Margaret, wife of John Casimir of Saxe-Coburg on August 7. Very rare, handsome patina, very fine or better.)
Margarethe war die Tochter des Herzogs Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Sie vermählte sich im Jahre 1599 mit Johann Casimir von Coburg, der zum zweiten Mal heiratete. Der hier vorliegende 1/8 Reichstaler wurde auf ihren Tod, von ihrem Bruder Friedrich von Celle, geprägt. Die Rückseitenumschrift kann man auf deutsch wie folgt übersetzten: Friedrich von Gottes Gnaden Herzog zu Braunschweig und Lüneburg, postulierter Coadjutor zu Ratzeburg und Probst des Erzbistums Bremens hats Gott dem höchsten und der Durchlauchtigsten Fürstin, Frau Margaretha, Herzogin zu Sachsen, geborene Herzogin zu Braunschweig und Lüneburg, Witwe, seiner liebsten Schwester machen lassen. Sie ist gestorben zu Celle am 7. August des Jahres 1643 und hat gelebt 70 Jahre 4 Monate und zwei Tage. (Margarethe was the daughter of Duke Wilhelm of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. In 1599 she married Johann Casimir von Coburg, who married for the second time. The present 1/8 Reichstaler was minted on her death by her brother Friedrich von Celle. The inscription on the back can be translated into English as follows: Friedrich by God's grace, Duke of Braunschweig and Lüneburg, provisional coadjutor of Ratzeburg and provost of the Archdiocese of Bremen. God [bless] the highest and most noble princess, Mrs. Margaretha, Duchess of Saxony, born Duchess of Braunschweig and Lüneburg, widow, let his dearest sister [rest in peace]. She died in Celle on August 7th, 1643 and lived 70 years, 4 months and two days.)"
The SCWC notes a half thaler (KM 165) and thaler (KM 168/Dav-6501) for this occasion but does not note any eighth thalers. It seems likely that a quarter thaler was issued as well. The duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle fell extinct in 1705 and passed to Hannover.
