Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle (1640-48)-LW 1/8 thaler
This specimen was lot 5601 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €340 (about US$473 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich, 1636-1648. 1/8 Reichstaler o. J. Clausthal. R Herrliche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. Erich Reichardt, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 49, Osnabrück 1999, Nr. 1704. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Frederick, 1636-48, undated one eighth thaler, Clausthal mint. Rare, superb patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This coin must have been issued after 1640, when Lippold Weber assumed the mintmaster's office in Clausthal. This type is known dated 1645-48. The duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle fell extinct in 1705 and passed to Hannover.
