Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 30224

This specimen was lot 30224 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenburg. 1-1/4 Talers, 1680. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August. PCGS Genuine--Corrosion Removed, AU Details. A very impressive multiple, despite exhibiting the noted corrosion removal and some cleaning to the surfaces, this piece nevertheless stands rather majestically, just like the wildman depicted in front of the Harz Mine. Offering a light, satiny gray hue, this charming oversized crown will no doubt delight. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. Johann Friedrich, the third brother, was duke in Calenberg 1665-79. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. This type was struck 1680 only and is a very unusual denomination for a wild man.
