Künker Auction 425, lot 1509

The first specimen was lot 1144 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $105.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "BREMEN: AR groten, 1764, mintmaster RDDB, PCGS graded MS64, ex Don Erickson Collection." This port on the North Sea was in decline in the eighteenth century, as reflected in its scanty coinage. It revived after the Napoleonic Wars as Germany began to industrialize. One thaler was 72 groten. This type also comes as a klippe (KM 204) but is rare thus. The second specimen was lot 1509 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,558 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · BREMEN, STADT Goldabschlag zu einem 1/2 Dukaten von den Stempeln des Groten 1764, mit Titel von Franz I. GOLD. RR Henkelspur, fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Westfälische Auktionsgesellschaft 40, Dortmund 2007, Nr. 395. (Germany, city of Bremen, gold strike in half ducat weight using groten dies in the name of Francis I. Recorded mintage: 203,000.
