This specimen was struck to honor the bicentennial of the death of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier (called "Tiradentes" by his enemies), who led an early anti-Portuguese rebellion, for which he was captured, hanged and quartered. It was issued while the "cruzeiro" was in use (1990-93). The currency would be reformed twice before the reform of 1994 finally stuck.
