Brazil 1990 50 centavos

In 1942, during the presidency of Getulio Vargas, the réis was dropped as a unit of currency after 400 years and the cruzeiro adopted. The cruzeiro itself was replaced in 1967 by the "novo cruzeiro," worth 1000 old cruzeiros. The "novo cruzeiro" lasted until 1985, to be replaced the cruzado novo. This fifty centavos was struck 1989-90. Six hundred metric tons of stainless steel were consumed producing these coins in 1990 and the next year they were useless. These dull, low relief stainless steel coins are very difficult to photograph.
