Shown is a copper-nickel five hundred réis of the United States of Brazil. This is part of the set of commemoratives honoring the four hundredth anniversary the colonization of Brazil, which event would today be celebrated with much less jubilation, considering the immense suffering on the part of the indigenes and kidnapped black Africans. The five hundred réis was last struck in 1939.
Recorded mintage: 34,000.
Specification: 3.95 g, aluminum bronze, 23 mm diameter.
