This specimen was lot 25223 in Heritage sale 61382 (Dallas, March 2024), where it sold for $468. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brazil: Republic 500 Reis 1912 XF40 NGC. Bust left variety. With only two examples of the type certified by NGC, this elusive offering is bested by a sole piece." Shown is a 500 réis of the United States of Brazil, of a type struck 1906-08, 1911-12. It was accompanied by similar 1000 réis and 2000 réis. The head right type (KM 509) was also struck in 1912 and is much more common. The denomination was abolished in 1942 with the reform of the coinage in that year. This example realized nearly six times the catalog value.

Specification: 5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 22 mm diameter, reeded edge, .144 troy oz ASW.
