Brazil 1912 2000 reis KM-511
This specimen was lot 70392 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 2000 Reis, 1912. Rio de Janeiro Mint. PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. A wondrous Gem, this glistening specimen features a great argent allure along with some smoky-rose toning and underlying radiance. The sole specimen atop the PCGS population report." Shown is a 2000 réis of the United States of Brazil, of a type struck 1912-13 only. The head of Liberty on this coin was reused on the subsequent type, struck 1924-34 which was base silver and only 7.9 grams. The denomination was abolished in 1942 with the reform of the coinage in that year.
