SB1122-71388r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71388 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 1000 Reis, 1887. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Pedro II. PCGS AU-58. A well-preserved piece with light argent toning and plenty of remaining luster. Scattered contact marks throughout, consistent with the grade. With a reported mintage of just 9,875, this is the scarcest date of the type. From the Pat Johnson Collection." In 1867 the silver coinage was redesigned to adopt the portrait of the emperor Pedro II, who already appeared on the gold coinage. The type went thru several minor modifications before settling on the final type shown here, struck 1876-89. Most of the fourteen dates of the type are reasonably available; this one is rather scarce.

Recorded mintage: 9,875.

Specification: 12.75 g, 0.917 fine silver, 30.3 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-481.
