The first specimen was lot 71387 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 1000 Reis, 1886. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Pedro II. PCGS MS-62. This lightly handled piece shows fields full of luster and crisp details. The surfaces are beautifully toned with a wide array of colors. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Privately purchased from Louis Collins, 1969." In 1867 the silver coinage was redesigned to adopt the portrait of the emperor Pedro II, who already appeared on the gold coinage. The type went thru several minor modifications before settling on the final type shown here, struck 1876-89. Most of the fourteen dates of the type are reasonably available; this one is slightly scarce.

Recorded mintage: 48,000.

Specification: 12.75 g, 0.917 fine silver, 30.3 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-481.
