This specimen was lot 1286 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $805. The catalog description[1] noted, "1853 20,000 reis. MS-63 (NGC). Bearded older head of Pedro II to left, legends around/crowned arms. Lustrous light yellow gold. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type, struck 1853-89, is the most common gold coin of the Empire.
Recorded mintage: 246,000.
Specification: 17.93 g, 0.917 fine gold, .528 troy oz; this specimen: 17.90 grams, 30.20 mm diameter.
