Brazil 1854 20000 reis
This specimen was lot 30107 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,110. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brazil: Pedro II gold 20000 Reis 1854 AU58 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint. A problem-free representative of this conditionally challenging issue, much finer than RLM's AU Details and retaining minimally handled surfaces shy of a Mint State designation. From the Petropolis Collection, Part III." This type, struck 1853-89, is among the moderately priced gold coins of the Empire of Brazil. It is part of the second reform of the coinage under the Empire; the first, in 1835, revalued the Spanish American peso from 960 réis to 1200 réis. The second reform of 1848 raised the peso to 2000 réis, where it remained until 1900.
