This specimen was lot 24053 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II 500 Reis 1887, toned XF, a nice example of this rare date, mintage 768." In 1867 the silver coinage was redesigned to adopt the portrait of the emperor Pedro II, who already appeared on the gold coinage. The type went thru several minor modifications before settling on the final type shown here, struck 1876-89. The 1888 and 1889 are very common, the 1876 somewhat scarce and the 1886 and 1887 are rare.
