In 1868 the silver coinage was redesigned to adopt the portrait of the emperor Pedro II, who already appeared on the gold coinage. The type went thru several minor modifications before settling on the final type shown here, struck 1886-89. The 1888 and 1889 are very common but the 1886 is rare.
Recorded mintage: 43,000.
