This silver 960 réis was minted at the Bahia mint 1824-26. These coins were usually struck over Spanish-American dollars but many other undertypes are known. This specimen was struck over a portrait dollar dated 1821, probably of the Mexico City mint. Large quantities were produced, making this and the similar Rio issue the commonest Brazilian silver coin of the early Empire, tho Bahia issues are much less frequently seen.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
