Brazil 1824-R 10 reis
This specimen was lot 23261 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 10 Reis, 1824-R. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Pedro I. PCGS MS-62 Brown. Exhibiting some minor striking weakness, this nearly choice specimen features an appealing light brown hue with hints of brilliance remaining near the peripheries." Copper coinage had long been a feature of colonial Brazil, unlike the Spanish American colonies, where copper did not circulate except as tokens. Large quantities were issued during the United Kingdom period (1818-22) and the early years of the empire (1822-31). However, the ten réis was not struck in the prodigious numbers of the twenty, forty and eighty réis in copper. Rio struck this type 1824 only and Bahia 1827 and 1829.
Recorded mintage: 235,000.
Specification: 3.58 g, copper.
