This silver 960 réis was minted at the Rio mint 1822-27. These coins were usually struck over Spanish-American dollars but many other undertypes are known. Large quantities were produced, making this and the similar Bahia issue the commonest Brazilian silver coin of the early Empire. The specimen was lot 20538 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro I 960 Reis 1823R 'IGNO', better XF. Well centered strike with appealing fields. Rarer 29-tulip variety."

Recorded mintage: 395,000 (all varieties).

Specification: 26.89 g, 0.896 fine silver, .775 troy oz ASW.
