Brazil 1823-G 75 reis
This specimen was lot 25158 in Heritage sale 61382 (Dallas, March 2024), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brazil: Pedro I 75 Reis 1823-G XF45 Brown NGC, Goias mint. A very rare one year type, one of the keys from the Brazil copper series, this being the only certified representative from NGC. The host coin still pe[e]ks through the new strike, an 1822 XL Reis, confirming the somewhat crude character of the type. Very desirable and elusive when encountered problem-free." This denomination was originally a silver coin struck 1753-60 for Minas Gerais, where silver circulated at a different value than the rest of the colony. It was revived in 1818 as a copper coin to supersede the copper eighty réis in those areas. This issue of 1823 terminated the series, which was never common. The nominal weight was half an ounce but they usually run light.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 14.34 g, copper.
