Brazil 1725-M 10000 reis
This specimen was lot 23643 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $17,250. The catalog description[1] noted,
"João V gold 10000 Reis 1725M, MS64 NGC, a marvelous example of this early coinage with full mint brilliance and instant eye appeal. Very rare quality. From The H.R. Collection of Brazilian Gold Gems."
This type was struck between 1724 and 1727 in Minas Gerais to consume the large quantities of gold coming out of the mines in that region. While the 4000 réis is relatively available, this type, the only 10000 réis issued during colonial times, is very scarce. Spanish colonial eight escudos of this period were 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW and traded for nearly the same value.
