This specimen was lot 33412 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brazil. João V gold 4000 Reis 1725-R AU58 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint. Virtually free of wear surfaces with a satin-look and few marks to the fields that prevented it from a higher designation. Ex. Santa Cruz Collection (Heritage Auction #3076, September 2019, Lot 61203)." This type was struck at Rio (shown here) and Bahia 1708-27 with a few more from Minas Gerais 1724-27. Mintage of this denomination was suspended in 1727; when it resumed in 1749 it was at a lower weight of 8.07 g.
