Brandenburg-Ansbach 1630 thaler Dav-6238
This specimen was lot 899 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it sold for €550 (about US$757 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, BRANDEBOURG-ANSBACH, Friedrich II, Albrecht et Christian (1625-1634), AR Taler, 1630, Nuremberg. D/ B. cuir. des trois frères de f. R/ Écu surmonté de trois heaumes. Flan large. Très Beau. (Germany, margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach, Frederick II, Albert and Christian 1625-34, silver thaler of 1630, Nuremberg mint. Obverse: armored busts of the three brothers facing; reverse: triple helmeted arms. Large planchet, Very Fine.)"
This thaler was struck 1629-31. Earlier variations are catalogued as Dav-6236 and Dav-6237. Friedrich II was killed at the battle of Nordlingen in 1634, aged 18. His brother Albert II succeeded him and ruled until 1667. A half thaler also exists.
