Brandenburg-Ansbach 1623 thaler Dav-6233
This specimen was lot 250 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,965 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG IN FRANKEN. Joachim Ernst, 1603-1625. Reichstaler 1623, Roth. Slg. Wilm. 826; Slg. Grüber (Auktion Künker 267) 4118. R Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Tönung, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Der Markgraf Joachim Ernst litt wahrscheinlich an Wassersucht. Im Jahr 1625 wurde er in Roth so krank, daß er nach Ansbach gebracht werden mußte. Mit 42 Jahren, am 25. Februar 1625, starb er an einem Schlaganfall und wurde zwei Monate später nach Heilsbronn gebracht, wo er in der dortigen Klosterkirche bestattet wurde. (margraviate of Brandenburg, Joachim Ernest, 1603-25, thaler of 1623. Scarce, attractive example with fine toning, very fine to extremely fine. In 1625, the margrave took ill at Roth and had to be taken to Ansbach. At the age of 42, on February 25, 1625, he died of a stroke, and two months later he was taken to Heilsbronn, where he was buried in the monastery church.)"
While the margrave issued a variety of minor coinage and kipper issues, a few thalers (Dav-6226 thru -6235) also exist. Another rare type.
