Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 23550

This specimen was lot 23550 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Brabant. Souverain d'Or (Lion d'Or), 1655. Brussels Mint; mm: head. Philip IV of Spain. NGC AU-58. Though some minor striking weakness is noted in a few spots, this wholesome example remains free from much in the way of handling and sports a golden-yellow hue that intensifies around the devices. From the David Sterling Collection." This type was struck 1648-65. The Brussels mint mark was an angel face, while Antwerp used a hand. Similar souverain d'or are recorded from Tournai and Flanders (Fr-227).

Specification: 5.54 g, 0.919 fine gold, 30 mm diameter.
