Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. Fractional ducatons are much less frequently encountered. The regular type, issued 1636-65 from Antwerp (shown here, with hand mintmark) and Brussels, is scarce but not rare. The other provinces issued this type, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver; this specimen 32.42 g.
