JE160-1161r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1161 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$6,963 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AV double souverain, 1643, Anvers. Deuxième type. D/ B. couronné à d., au mince collet. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Belle patine. Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-55, gold double souverain of 1643, Antwerp mint, second type. Obverse: crowned bust right in thin collar; reverse: crowned arms, Order chain around. Nice patina, extremely fine.)"

This type is listed for Flanders, Tournai and Artois but is nowhere common. In 1637, the bust was revised to show a much smaller ruffed collar. The hand mintmark denotes this as a Antwerp issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
