Brabant 1628(h) patagon Dav-4462
The first specimen was lot 3582 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"BELGIEN Brabant, Herzogtum Philipp IV. 1621-1665. Patagon 1628, Antwerpen. Sehr schön. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV of Spain, 1621-65, patagon of 1628, Antwerp mint, very fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 976 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €160 (about US$223 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR patagon, 1628, Anvers. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Écu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Flan large. Belle patine. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver patagon of 1628, Antwerp mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross below a crown, decorated with the jewels of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Large planchet, nice patina, Very Fine.)"
Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck 1621-39 and 1645-60 at the Antwerp mint (hand mintmark, shown here) and Brussels (angel face mintmark). Other patagons are known from Artois, Franche Comté, Flanders, Luxembourg and Tournai. Altho the half and quarter patagons are much scarcer than the patagons, they bring less at auction. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: 28.1 g, 0.875 fine silver, the first specimen 27,96 g; the second specimen 27,34 g.
