Brabant 1627(s) patagon Dav-4462
This specimen was lot 801 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €240 (about US$325 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR patagon, 1627, Maastricht. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très Beau. Provient de notre liste 261, juillet 2012, 641. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver patagon of 1627, Maastricht mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, bearing the jewels of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very Fine.)"
Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Brussels mint 1621-60 (angel face mintmark), the Antwerp mint 1622-65 (hand mintmark) and at the Maastricht mint 1625-31 (star mintmark, shown here). A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4457). The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The city of Maastricht, on the banks of the Meuse or Maas river, is actually not in Brabant but in the duchy of Limburg. However, the obverse legend "BVRG·BRAB·ZC" indicates that the coinage was intended to circulate in Brabant. The Maastricht issues are priced about double those of Brussels or Antwerp. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.10 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 27,67 g.
