This specimen was lot 708 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for € 480 (about US$750 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), AR écu Philippe, 1557, Anvers. Au titre de roi d'Angleterre. Droit : B. cuirassé à gauche. Revers : Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne, entre deux briquets, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. Légère faiblesse de frappe au revers. Belle patine. (Duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, silver écu Philippe of 1577, Antwerp mint, with the title of king of England. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross, Golden Fleece below. Slightly weak strike, nice toning, Very fine to extremely fine.)

A partir de 1557, une nouvelle grosse monnaie d'argent fut frappée pour remplacer le florin Karolus d'argent: le demi-réal d'argent, bientôt appelé daldre Philippus (Philipsdaalder) ou écu Philippe à cause du buste royal figurant au droit. Le cours du demi-réal d'or était à ce moment 35 sous et la masse de l'écu Philippe (34,27 g) bien plus élevée que celle du florin Karolus d'argent (22,85 g). Les subdivisions de l'écu Philippe furent introduites en 1562 pour remplacer les pièces de quatre patards, les patards et les gros de billon qui ne formaient plus la base des monnaies d'argent dont le cours en patards (sous) variait. Désormais, une série complète de huit valeurs allait du réal au 40e d'écu Philippe. En 1581, le cours de l'écu Philippe était passé à 50 patards soit une hausse de près de 43% depuis 1557. Très Beau à Superbe." (After 1557, a new, large, silver coin was struck to replace the silver florin, called the Philipsdaalder or écu Philippe from the royal bust appearing on the obverse. The half real d'or was worth 35 sous and the écu weighed 34.27 grams versus 22.85 grams for the florin. The subdivisions of the écu were introduced in 1562 to replace the four patards, patards and gros de billon. This series valued the real at 1/40th of an écu. In 1581, the value of the écu had risen to 50 patards, an increase of 43% since 1557.)

The second specimen was lot 4943 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,513 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"BELGIEN, BRABANT Philipp II. von Spanien, 1555-1598. Philippstaler (Ecu Philipp) / Filipsdaalder 1557, Antwerpen. Mit PHS am Anfang der Vorderseitenumschrift. RR Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Jesus Vico 158, Madrid 2021, Nr. 983. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II of Spain, 1555-98, écu Philippe of 1557, Antwerp mint, with PHS at the start of the obverse legend. Very rare, very fine.)"

The second example was misattributed by the auctioneers to Dav-8625, which has the king's name spelled "PHILIPPVS". These were also struck at Maastricht.

Reported Mintage: 378,905 for 1557-59.

Specification: 34.28 g, 0.833 fine silver, 42 mm diameter, the first specimen 34,26 g, the second specimen 31,19 g.
