Jean Elsen sale 151, lot 1011

This specimen was lot 1011 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,498 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), AR écu Philippe, 1558, Maastricht. Au titre de roi d'Angleterre. D/ B. cuir. à g. PHS· dans la légende. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne, entre deux briquets, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. Fine craquelure du flan. Beau portrait et belle patine. presque Superbe. Provient de Jean Elsen, décembre 1978 et de notre vente 59, 20 septembre 1999, 1328. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, silver écu Philippe of 1558, Maastricht mint, with the title of king of England. Obverse: armored bust left, "PHS" in the legend; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross, between two firesteels, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Fine planchet cracks, nice portrait and toning, about Extremely Fine.)"

The early écus Philippe come in many varieties. Dav-8621, -8623, -8625, -8627 come with the bust facing left, while Dav-8626, -8631, -8632 face right. Dav-8621, -8623, -8625 and -8626 mention the Philip's title of king of England whereas Dav-8627, -8629, -8631, -8632 drop the title. Sometimes the king's name is spelled in full, on others it is abbreviated "PHS". Most were minted at Antwerp but a few were made at Maastricht. Double écus are listed in Davenport but we haven't seen any images for the Wiki.
