This type was struck in large quantities 1872-77 after Bolivia converted to decimal coinage in 1864. The boliviano was adopted as the successor to the old eight soles (or sueldos; the sources do not agree) and struck in various forms 1864-93. The series contains many rare dates and varieties but this one is common. The previous type (KM 155.4, see the second specimen), distinguished by the reverse legend "LA UNION HACE LA FUERZA" instead of "LA UNION ES LA FUERZA," was also struck in 1872 but is scarce. The second specimen was lot 1277 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $726. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Republic. 1825-present. AR Boliviano. Potosí mint. Fortunato Equivar, assayer. Dated 1872 PTS ER. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65. Superb lustrous faintly toned UNC. None graded higher. Purchased August 1971." The silver boliviano effectively ended in 1875; later dates (1877, 1879, 1884, 1887, 1893) exist but they are very rare.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, edge reeded, the second specimen Ø35 mm, 25.28 g, 5h axis.
