Bolivia 1856-Paz P sol
This specimen was lot 1174 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,149.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Republic. 1825-present. AR Sol. La Paz mint. Dated 1856 PAZ P. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 67. Very light patina over crisp gem surfaces. Two year only type and extremely rare, especially with this crude La Paz style portrait. Purchased from Louis Collins, December 1972." The La Paz mint produced these debased one sol coins 1855-56. These coins, along with contemporary issues from the Potosi mint, flooded South America and were denounced by Bolivia's neighbors, to no avail. Though the Potosi mint would eventually reform the coinage and produce standard silver weights, La Paz mint would close.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
