Bolivia H3073-32428r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32428 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 2 Soles 1856 PAZ-P F15 NGC, La Paz mint. An extremely rare type, likely missing from most collections of Bolivian coins, and showcasing what appears to be a strikethrough error on the reverse. From the Engelen Collection of World Coinage." The La Paz mint produced these debased two soles coins 1854-56. These coins, along with contemporary issues from the Potosi mint, flooded South America and were denounced by Bolivia's neighbors, to no avail. Though the Potosi mint would eventually reform the coinage and produce standard silver weights, La Paz mint would close.

Recorded mintage: unknown but 10 are known to exist.

Specification: 6.2 g, 0.667 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 129.
