Aureo sale 238, lot 468

This specimen was lot 468 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 110 euro (about US$174 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1809. Potosí. PJ. 8 reales. Escasa. MBC+/EBC-. (eight reales of 1809, Potosí mint. Scarce, choice very fine to extremely fine.)"

Assayer PJ is recorded for the years 1803-25. These eight reales of Ferdinand VII dated 1809 were almost certainly minted later as they bear the standard bust of the king not used until 1811 in Mexico. No Potosí mint coins are known dated 1810-12 as the mint was then occupied by the Argentines.

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarce.
