This specimen was lot 51341 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 1/4 Real, 1809-PTS. Potosi Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC MS-63. Variety with tall narrow gate on castle. A wonderful Choice example of the RARE final date of Cuartillo production from Potosi. The coin's argent and exceedingly lustrous fields contrast stunningly with the frosted devices. Tied with one other for finest certified by NGC, a collector could hardly ask for a better example of the date. From the EMO Collection. Ex: Whittier Collection." This is an example of a type struck 1796-1809 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). Silver quarter reales are also known from Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, Peru and Colombia. After independence, production of quarter reales would not resume until 1852.
