Bolivia 1791-PTS PR escudo KM-74
This specimen was lot 24150 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $3,818.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles IV gold Escudo 1791 PTS-PR, Potosi Mint, XF45 NGC. An attractive specimen of this rare one-year type struck in 1791 with a laureate Charles IV bust. All minor denominations of this type are actually rarer than the more famous (and sought after) 8 Escudos." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1791 only and featured a locally engraved bust of the king. No other mint did this in 1791. The regular bust (KM 78) deleted the laurel wreath.
