Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71236

This specimen was lot 71236 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1754-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Jose Caballero (C). Ferdinand VI. PCGS VF-30. A nicely toned Cob with decipherable date and assayer on the obverse and visible mintmark, along with a partial date, on the reverse. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Purchased privately from Mike Dunigan." This type was struck for Ferdinand VI through his entire reign. Assayer "q" stamped coins 1744-59. Assayer "C" is listed for 1753-54 along with assayer "q". The silver cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine in 1728.
